Acoustic, Alternative/Modern Rock

Nicolas Bollinger, the independent recording artist known as Latent, and gatekeeper of a surname that should only be approached from the front end monosyllabic-ally, has been crafting hideous music in an embarrassing attempt to give meaning to his life since 2004. In 2007, he decided he was done making awful music and began a career in making mediocre music, which resulted in a personal record setting five CDs sold. Finally, in 2011, Nicolas set out to make a concept album. It was possibly the worst idea he ever had, and it took him three years to write, record, and produce it. To the flabbergasted surprise of the seven people who heard it, the album was of pristine quality. As Nicolas exclaimed one fine afternoon just moments after getting out of bed, the music is "delicious flavor for the ears", and most people who listen to more than ten seconds of one of these Latent songs tend to agree. After a problematic response to his above-documented statement, Nicolas later recanted the statement, saying "I never intended to imply that ears are for consumption, or that sprinkling the ashes of my liner notes on them, somehow makes them more edible. That person has serious problems, and I'm sorry about that incident."Nicolas resides in a basement he does not own with his partner, Sarah. She is the primary writer of not yet released "The Vines of Eden" book series, from which "The Earth of Eden" album draws its conceptual elements.

The Concept

A concept album is often inaccurately equated to being musically progressive by nature. But in reality, no progressive tropes, no modal soloing, nor even the signature theatrical expressiveness many progressive rock artists wantonly abuse is needed to achieve a solid work of concept."The Earth of Eden" is an album that would not be considered progressive by most individuals. Musically, some songs have a progressive feel, but the tone of the album, though at times dramatic, is more subtle in its movements than traditional progressive rock or metal. The story is less ubiquitous in its presentation, to the point that some might call it a group of "concept songs" rather than a cohesive story. This was intentional, and even with a completed book series, it might be hard for the reader/listener to pick out particular perspectives telling each story. You will, at times, wonder what is going on. This is to be expected. For right now, the story is what you make of it. When it's done, just imagine a large bear of a man leaning toward you and whispering gently in your ear "you were wrong all along...."The similarities between TEOE and progressive concept albums lie in the way in which they are intended to be listened to. This is important. The stories are unique for each song, but TEOE is an experience that I feel should be taken as a whole before settling on a song or two. Some of the songs are rough in their initial presentation, but clean up nicely after a short time. Remember that the textures, choice of instruments, and even the vocal style is meant to fit the tone of the song, which is in turn meant to move the album, and thus the story, along.

The Earth of Eden» is a work of concept, based on a book series in progress, that blends the alternative, acoustic, and rock genres together into a fantastic journey of sweeping melodies and profound songwriting.
